“Disease, Health, and Life from the viewpoint of DNA”

On June 5th 2013, we hold the lecture patry was having Dr.Yasubumi Sakakibara, Professor, Department of Biosciences and Informatics, Keio University as our guest speaker. He made a speech about Disease, Health, and Life from the viewpoint of DNA.
The information written on DNA (called genome) in our cell is the blueprint to make our body, the genetic information inherited from parent to child, and an ultimate personal information. Thanks to the recent development of next generation sequence technology, the human genome can be efficiently determined, and in several years, the cost to read a human personal genome will be less than 1000 dollars, which means everyone will be able to know its own genome. We deeply thought about this would also significantly change medical treatment and individual personal life.
After his speech we enjoyed great dinner and expanded the wave of exchanges.

Impressions

Nowadays, we can read an ultimate individual information, our DNA, at a relatively low cost. It is just like a fictional world as a scene of Keigo Higashino's “Platinum Data”.
I heard that hereditary diseases, for example, cancer can be prevented by using latest technology of DNA recombination. I also heard that we should not fit all of our genomes to the same sequence to keep strength of humankind as a species. I learned the importance of diversity anew.
I appreciate this priceless opportunity to learn human body at the micro level we don't often think about.
